You should carry uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance and you should carry as much of it as possible. I'm going to lay out a couple of examples illustrating why this is.
Example 1: Man was rear ended on the highway and pushed into a vehicle in front of him. His neck was broken in the accident, he was transported to the hospital where spinal surgery occured (through the front of his neck). He was unemployed for six months. His child support was unpaid during that time. He lost his apartment and had to live with his mom. The surgery and total hospital and ambulance bill came out to $77,000.00. The driver who hit him had $50,000.00 of insurance. How much did this man get of this money? Zero. The hospital took all the money. He should have had underinsured motorist (UM) insurance, if he had, more of his damages would have been covered, including things like his lost wages and his suffering. We were able to help him in his situation, but he would have ended up with significant money in his pocket if he had carried underinsured/uninsured motorist insurance.
Example 2: Woman was driving and another driver crossed the centerline striking her car in the front driverside quarter panel; each car was traveling at 35mph. The other driver was clearly at fault and carried the state required liability insurance of $25,000.00. Woman was hospitalized and crippled for 6 months. She lost wages and endured much medical treatment. Her medical bill was more than $50,000.00. The insurance company paid out as required but the woman still the hospital tens of thousands of dollars.
If either of these people had been carrying uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance each would have made a significant recovery in cash because of their medical treatment, pain, and lost wages. Because they didn't carry it, their lives were significantly disrupted and they can't do anything about it.
We recommend that all drivers carry liability insurance coverage with policy limits equal to $100,000.00/$300,000.00 and that they also make sure that they have uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance in an equal amount. People think that these problems won't occur, but we're here to tell you that an auto accident can knock you out at any time. Protect yourself and your loved ones by having adequate liability and UM insurance. Review your limits today.
